Birgit Mandel (* 1963 ) is professor for cultural management and cultural mediation and heads the master's degree in cultural mediation

at the University of Hildesheim .

Life

Mandel studied cultural education with a focus on theater, literature and the visual arts at the University of Hildesheim. As an employee in the cultural studies and aesthetic practice course at the University of Hildesheim with a focus on cultural management, she received her doctorate in 1995 with a thesis on the subject of »Ideal images are made true. Appropriation of the holiday world through photo souvenirs using the example of German tourists to Italy in the 50s and 60s «. She took on teaching positions at the Berlin University of the Arts , the University of Vienna , the Helsinki University of the Arts and Belgrade. She worked in various practical fields of cultural management, including marketing for the Berliner Festspiele GmbH, the Berlin Senate for Culture, the Bar every Vernunft Berlin and the nationwide GmbH Wissenschaft im Dialog. Since 2007 she has been a professor for cultural management and cultural mediation at the Institute for Cultural Policy at the University of Hildesheim and course officer for the courses in cultural studies and aesthetic practice BA and cultural mediation MA

She has carried out various research projects at the interface between cultural mediation, cultural education, audience development, cultural management and cultural policy, as well as some visitor studies and population surveys.

Research projects in the areas of audience development, cultural user research, cultural PR and cultural marketing, change processes in cultural institutions, cultural leadership, cultural entrepreneurship, theory of cultural management, cultural tourism and cultural mediation . She is the editor of the research website Kulturvermittlung-online.de .
