Saint Pierre Church

Machault is a French commune with 505 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ardennes department in the Grand Est region in the canton of Attigny . It is the capital of the canton.

The departmental roads 980 and 23 intersect in the village.

history

During the First World War , Machault was occupied by German troops from September 2, 1914 to October 11, 1918. The remaining civilian population was forcibly evacuated on June 6, 1917. The first villagers returned to the village on October 18, 1918. The church of the village of Saint Pierre was listed as a historical monument in 1919 .

The population of the municipality was 523 people in 1962 and rose to 551 people by 1968. The number of residents then fell to 437 by 1999.

Personalities

The French composer and poet Guillaume de Machaut (* between 1300 and 1305, † 1377) was born in Machault. The French doctor Jean-Baptiste Caqué (1720–1787) was also born in Machault.
