The municipality is located around 48 kilometers east of Reims . Sainte-Marie is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Savigny-sur-Aisne in the east, Sugny in the south, Contreuve in the southwest, Bourcq in the northwest and the municipality of Vouziers in the north in the canton of the same name .

Until 1828 the municipality was called Sainte-Marie-sous-Bourcq .
