Félix María del Monte

Félix María del Monte (born November 19, 1819 in Santo Domingo , † April 23, 1899 ibid ) was a Dominican lawyer , journalist and poet .

Del Monte was committed to the independence of the Dominican Republic throughout his life . He belonged to the secret organization La Trinitaria and wrote the text for the hymn of the first republic in 1844, which was set to music by Juan Bautista Alfonseca . In 1845 he was the first Dominican to receive the title of lawyer from the Supreme Court.

In exile on Saint Thomas he wrote El arpa del proscrito in 1855 and after the renewed Spanish annexation of the Dominican Republic in 1861 the sonnet A mi patria . During the Second Republic, he was Congressman and Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Justice, taught law and literature, and founded the magazines El Dominocano and El Porvenir . He wrote several dramas that were performed at the Teatro La República .
