Juan Bautista Alfonseca
Juan Bautista Alfonseca de Baris (* 1810 in Santo Domingo ; † 1875 ) was a Dominican composer and conductor.
The musical autodidact Alfonseca was regarded by his contemporaries as the "father of Dominican music". He was the first composer to integrate the rhythms of merengue and mangulina into classical ballroom music. In 1844, the year of independence, he composed the first Dominican national anthem based on a text by Félix María del Monte . At the same time he became the leader of the first Santo Domingo military band. In 1846 he was appointed music instructor of the military band with the rank of captain, then director of the band with the rank of lieutenant. From 1852 the military band gave regular concerts under Alfonseca's direction. In addition to merengues, mangulinas, waltzes, mazurkas and danzas, Alfonseca also composed two masses and a miserere.
