Sainte-Vaubourg is a French commune with 87 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ardennes department in the Grand Est region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Vouziers and the canton of Attigny .

history

In the 8th and 9th centuries, the Attigny royal palace was one of the most important residences of the Carolingians . It was here that Widukind was baptized in 785 and the public act of penance by Louis the Pious , the penance of Attigny , took place in 822 . In 978, the Palatinate Attigny was burned down after the surprise attack by the West Franconian King Lothar on the Aachen royal palace when Otto II countered. It was not rebuilt after that and soon disappeared from the map. However, the Attigny domain continued to belong to the crown estate and was the only royal estate north of the Île-de-France next to Montreuil when Hugo Capet took office in 987 .

The place got its current name after the relics of St. Walburga , with which King Charles the Simple furnished the newly founded chapel of the royal palace in 916.
