Le Quesnoy ( Dutch Kiezenet ) is a French municipality with 4934 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It is located between Valenciennes and Maubeuge , on the Rhonelle river . In the Middle Ages it was the residence of the Counts of Hainaut .

history

In the 12th century, Count Balduin IV fortified the town of Le Quesnoy and built a castle in which his successors would reside until the 15th century. In 1169, Emperor Frederick I visited Barbarossa Le Quesnoy to attend the wedding between Baldwin V and Margaret of Flanders . With the Hainaut, Le Quesnoy came under the rule of the Wittelsbachers in 1345 and in 1433 with the Dutch territories of the Duchy of Straubing-Holland under the rule of the House of Burgundy .

After the Burgundy family died out, Le Quesnoy fell to France in 1477. The French King Francis I had the castle and the city expanded into a fortress. Le Quesnoy was subsequently controversial between France and the Habsburgs . It was not until 1654 that Turenne finally succeeded in tying the city to France. After the Peace of the Pyrenees in 1659, Vauban , the fortress builder of Louis XIV , had the fortifications reinforced again.

During the War of the Spanish Succession , Prince Eugene briefly occupied the city. During the First World War , Le Quesnoy was occupied by the Germans and finally retaken by New Zealand troops in 1918 . In the city today a memorial commemorates the liberation by the New Zealanders. The New Zealand city of Cambridge is twinned with Le Quesnoy. During the Second World War , Le Quesnoy came under German control again, but was again recaptured for France.
