The Monastery of La Blanche (Notre-Dame de la Blanche) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Noirmoutier-en-l'Île in the Vendée department , Pays de la Loire region , in France . It is located on the island of Noirmoutier around 5 km northwest of the main town.

history

The monastery was founded in 1172 on the islet of Pilier, northwest of Noirmoutier island, which was then called Île de Dieu. After the living conditions there proved to be too harsh, Peter V von der Garnache donated land on the island of Noirmoutier in 1205, on which a new monastery was built, which according to the habit of its monks la Blanche (the White Monastery) in contrast to the settlement of the Black monks ( Benedictines ) in Noirmoutier was called. The monastery belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey , as its immediate mother monastery is called Buzay Monastery . It had a grangie in Orouet. At the beginning of the 16th century it fell into the future . In 1562 the monastery was sacked by the people of Nantes and the Huguenots from La Rochelle . Around 1611, the Breton monastery of Prières reformed the abbey, which came to an end during the French Revolution . Today it is privately owned and is not accessible.

Buildings and plant

The lion gate (la porte des lions), which was rebuilt in the 17th century and originally from the 13th century, has been preserved. A sculpture-adorned portal from the 13th century has been preserved from the church.
