Tyrone Kennedy Corbin (born December 31, 1962 in Columbia , South Carolina ) is an American basketball coach and former player. Between 1985 and 2001, Corbin served for nine different teams in the National Basketball Association . From February 2011 to April 2014 he was the coach of Utah Jazz . Between December 2014 and April 2015, Corbin coached the Sacramento Kings . Today Corbin works as an assistant coach for Orlando Magic .
Career as a player
After graduating from DePaul University in Chicago , Corbin was selected in the 1985 NBA draft in the second round of drafts by the San Antonio Spurs . After an inconspicuous rookie season, Corbin rose the following year and scored nine points per game before he was transferred to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the middle of the season . After a stopover at the Phoenix Suns , he was committed to the 1989 Expansion Draft by the newly formed Minnesota Timberwolves . With the weak Timberwolves, Corbin developed into a key player and, statistically speaking, had the best time of his career there. During the 1990-91 season, Corbin averaged 18.0 points, 7.2 rebounds , 4.2 assists and 2 steals per game. On January 2, 1991, Corbin succeeded with 10 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists against the Dallas Mavericks, the first triple-double in Timberwolves history.
During the 1991-92 season, Corbin was transferred to the Utah Jazz in exchange for Thurl Bailey . In 1992 and 1994 Corbin and Jazz managed to advance to the Western Conference finals. In three years with the Jazz Corbin brought it to 9.6 points and 6.2 rebounds in 233 games. In 1994 a transfer to the Atlanta Hawks followed . After Corbin had played in the 1995-96 season for the Miami Heat and the Sacramento Kings , he moved back to the Hawks in 1996, where he was active until 1999. In the final years of his career, Corbin played again in Sacramento and with the Toronto Raptors .
Career as a coach
After his retirement, Corbin worked for two years as a player mentor with the Charleston Lowgators in the NBDL development league . During the 2003-04 season, Scott Layden , manager of the New York Knicks , brought Corbin into the management of the Knicks. In 2004, Utah Jazz hired him as an assistant coach. In Salt Lake City , Corbin worked in this role for seven years before coach Jerry Sloan resigned in February 2011 after 23 years. The Jazz named Corbin as his successor. Corbin reached the playoffs with Utah in 2012, but was eliminated in the first round. After a weak 2013/2014 season, which ended the Jazz in last place in the Western Conference, Corbin's contract was not renewed by the Jazz.
In 2014 he became an assistant coach with the Sacramento Kings . After a few weeks, Corbin inherited Mike Malone and took over the Kings team as coach. However, there was no sporting success under Corbin and he was replaced by George Karl after a record of 7 wins and 21 defeats .
In 2016, Corbin became assistant coach under Earl Watson at the Phoenix Suns . In 2018 he was employed in the same position at the Orlando Magic under Steve Clifford .
Personal
Corbin is married and has two children with his wife Dante.
