Coaching career
college
Van Gundy began his coaching career in 1987 as an assistant coach at Canisius College and in 1988, also as an assistant coach, at Fordham University . He then became head coach at Castleton State College and led the team to a record of 68:18 wins. With that he broke the school record in his first season as coach of the team. He later became the head coach at the University of Massachusetts Lowell . In 1994 he took over from Stu Jackson as a coach at the University of Wisconsin – Madison . In his eight-year career as a college coach , he recorded a record of 135:92 wins.
NBA
Miami Heat
In 1995 he became Pat Riley's assistant at the Miami Heat . However, when Riley no longer wanted to be coach, but only president of the Miami Heat in the 2003/04 season , Van Gundy took over the team. He finished the season with 42 wins. He was able to book many of the victories especially at the end of the season. He caused a surprise when Miami even reached the 2nd round of the playoffs in the same season. In the offseason 2004 the Los Angeles Lakers traded Shaquille O'Neal to Miami, so that the team could finish the following season with 59 wins. With that, they led the Eastern Conference . Van Gundy was even allowed to coach the all-star team as the first heat trainer ever . After the 3: 4 Eastern Conference Final defeat in 2005 and other internal problems, Van Gundy was dismissed on December 12, 2005.
Orlando Magic
Candidates for Van Gundy were the Orlando Magic and the Sacramento Kings . On June 5, 2007, he finally signed with the Magic. He finished his first season in Orlando with a 52:30 win record. In the first round of the playoffs he was even able to defeat the Toronto Raptors 4-1, but lost 4-1 to the Detroit Pistons in the second round . In the following year, the Magic under Van Gundy finished the regular season with 59 wins and one more play-off participation. After defeating the Philadelphia 76ers 4-2 and the Boston Celtics 4-3, the Magic won 4-2 against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference final and became Eastern Conference champions. In the finals, however, Van Gundy and his team lost to Phil Jackson and his Los Angeles Lakers 4-1. Van Gundy was active on the sidelines for Magic until 2012. However, after more and more dissonances occurred between him and the club's leadership, he was dismissed after the 2011/12 season .
Detroit Pistons
For the 2014/15 season , Van Gundy was introduced as the new coach of the Detroit Pistons . There he got a contract until 2019. After four years in Detroit, where they made it into the playoffs, the Pistons parted ways with their head coach in May 2018.
