Pista Olímpica Virgilio Uribe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pista Olímpica de Remo y Canotaje Virgilio Uribe is a regatta course for rowers and canoeists in Mexico City . It is located in the northwest of the endorheic former Lago de Xochimilco in the municipality of the same name and was built in 1967/1968 for the 1968 Summer Olympics . It is named after the national hero Virgilio Uribe from the time of the American occupation of Veracruz in 1914 .

Construction and location

The construction period extended from January 23, 1967 to July 1968, i.e. until shortly before the Olympic Games opened on October 12. Thomas Keller , the then President of the World Rowing Federation FISA , called it “Canal del Milagro - Wonder Canal” because of the short time it took to build it. The regatta course, roughly 2200 meters long in an approximate north-south direction, lies to the west parallel to the Canal de Cuemanco , is 125 m wide, 2 m deep and has a 30 cm thick clay seal. A shorter and narrower side channel on the northwest side can be used for training purposes; in the northeast on the opposite side of the facility there is a grandstand. The channel edges are edged with concrete on all four sides . Function rooms and a press center are located at the north end.

Events

There are often national and international competitions. In addition to the 1968 Olympics , which brought the Germany eighth gold medal and the rowers in the GDR with the largest number of medals, the Rowing World Cup 1993 and, most recently, the Regata de Canotaje de la Secretaría de Marina 2015 should be mentioned .
