NGC 4343 is a spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type Sb in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 42 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 30,000 ly. It is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under the catalog name VCC 656 .
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 4341 , NGC 4342 , IC 3256 , IC 3267 , among others .
The object was discovered on April 13, 1784 by the astronomer William Herschel using his 18.7 inch mirror telescope.
