NGC 4339 is an elliptical galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type E1 in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 53 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 30,000 ly. The galaxy is listed under catalog number VVC 648 as part of the Virgo galaxy cluster .
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4326 , NGC 4333 , NGC 4376 , IC 3268 .

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 13, 1784 .
