NGC 4242 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBd in the constellation Hounds in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 25 million light years from the Milky Way and about 35,000 ly in diameter.
The Type IIn (?) Supernova SN 2002bu was observed here.
The object was discovered on April 10, 1788 by the astronomer William Herschel with the help of his 18.7-inch telescope.
