NGC 4231 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Hounds in the northern sky . It is an estimated 333 million light years from the Milky Way and about 120,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 4232 , it forms the gravitationally bound galaxy pair Holm 356 .

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4217 , NGC 4220 , NGC 4226 , NGC 4248 .

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on March 9, 1788 .
