NGC 4217 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sb in the constellation Canes Venatici on the northern sky . It is estimated to be 49 million light years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light years in diameter. The object is a so-called edge-on galaxy , i. H. we see them exactly at the edge. The spiral arms appear here only as dark dusty clouds, illuminated by the bright center of the galaxy. Together with NGC 4226 , it forms the optical pair of galaxies Holm 354 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4220 , NGC 4231 , NGC 4232 , NGC 4248 .
