Hayden James Richard Powell (born September 25, 1983 ) is a Norwegian-British jazz musician ( trumpet and composition ) who lives in Oslo .

Live and act

Powell, who first grew up in Vestnes and after the separation of his parents in Molde , studied jazz at the Trondheim Music Conservatory until his bachelor's degree in 2006 and then continued his studies until his master's degree in 2011 at Norges Musikkhøgskole . As a teenager he played with the band Dixi , which produced four albums with him.

Then he founded his own trio with pianist Eyolf Dale and bassist Jo Skaansar and played with Magic Pocket and the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra . The album Kinetic Music with Trondheim Jazz Orchestra and Magic Pocket includes his own compositions. He also worked with Terje Rypdal , Kenny Wheeler , Eirik Hegdal , Vigleik Storaas , Nils-Olav Johansen , Ole Morten Vågan , and Ståle Storløkken . In 2011 Tore Johansen released Powell's debut album The Attic on his label Inner Ear , on which the Hayden Powell Trio appeared as a sextet with three more musicians.

As a composer, Powell wrote commissioned works for big bands such as the Midtnorsk Ungdomsstorband , Big Boss Band , Ett Fett Storband and combos. He also composed a short opera based on the novel Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (2006) and arranged for the album The Architect by Jens Carelius.

Prizes and awards

Powell received a scholarship from Moldejazz in 2006 (2006). In 2009 he was awarded the Talent Prize of the Trondheim Jazz Festival. With the band Magic Pocket he received a jazz scholarship in 2009/10 .
