The festival was initiated as a weekend festival by the local Storyville Jazz Club and has received government support since 1964. Over time it grew to annual visitor numbers of 80,000 to 100,000 over a period of one week. In addition to jazz, musicians from rock , pop music , blues and world music also perform . Around half of the around 140 concerts (2013) are free.
Jan Garbarek , Karin Krog , Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and John Scofield often performed here .
Tradition is a daily jazz parade of musicians along the lines of New Orleans Street Parades, and for years the New Orleans musician Lionel Batiste led this.
It is one of the three major Norwegian jazz festivals with the Kongsberg Jazz Festival and the Oslo Jazz Festival. The important Norwegian jazz prize Buddyprisen was temporarily awarded here.
The concerts will be broadcast on Norwegian radio and television. Accordingly, there is a film from the 1962 festival (with Karin Krog, the Arne Domnérus Orchestra, Idrees Sulieman , Lucky Thompson ).
Some compositions were commissioned and composed especially for the festival. Well-known are the Molde Canticle by Jan Garbarek and the composition Break of Day in Molde (1969) by Karin Krog based on Ida Lupino by Carla Bley .
From 2001 to 2012 it was headed by Jan Ole Otnæs (* 1951).
