Ola Kvernberg (born June 6, 1981 in Fræna ) is a Norwegian jazz violinist (also viola , mandolin , other instruments, vocals ) and composer .

Live and act

Kvernberg comes from a family of folk musicians; he is a grandson of folk dance composer Peter L. Rypdal (1909–1988); his mother and sister play the violin and Hardanger fiddle . At the age of nine he learned classical violin; at the age of 14 he won third prize in a classical music competition in Italy.

As a teenager, Kvernberg first played folk music and received classical training at the local music school. His first recordings were made in 1995 with the band Fear of Flying . Two years later, when he was 16, he started playing jazz ; Between 2001 and 2003 he had lessons in the jazz program of the Trondheim Conservatory . He became famous in Norway in 2000 together with the quartet Hot Club de Norvège at the annual Django Festival in Oslo (where he jammed with Toots Thielemans ). In 2000 he was featured on the album Hot Club de Norvege presenting Ola Kvernberg & Jimmy Rosenberg (2000) with swing standards like Sweet Georgia Brown , Oh, Lady Be Good! or It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) . The first album under his own name Ola Kvernberg (2001) followed stylistically with classics such as Honeysuckle Rose or I Can't Give You Anything but Love . He was also involved in the production of White Night Stories in 2002 with the Hot Club de Norvège , Angelo Debarre and the Tromsø Symphony Orchestra .

With his trio, which included guitarist Doug Raney and bassist Steinar Raknes , the album Cats & Doug (Hot Club Records, 2002) was created with standards and original compositions, which was followed by other trio albums. In 2010 he presented his film music Liarbird (for the film Nord by Erlend Loe ) with Joshua Redman at the Molde Festival ; In 2011 he received the Spellemann Prize for the album of the same name . He also received his first nomination for the Norwegian film award Amanda for Best Music . He received the award four years later with his second nomination for the drama Chasing the Wind . In 2017 he recorded the album Steamdome in a large cast .

Furthermore, Kvernberg u. a. with Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and Philip Catherine (with whom he performed at the Molde Jazz Festival in 2004). He is a member of various formations of Ingebrigt Håker Flaten , with whom he also recorded CDs. He also works in the Gammalgrass Trio (with Stian Carstensen and Ole Morten Vågan ) and in The Scarlatti Ensemble (with Kim Myhr , Eirik Hegdal and Marianne Baudouin Lie ). He also appeared with Siri Gjæres Trønderhøns and as a guest musician on the album Banjovi (with Finn Guttormsen , Stian Carstensen, Haakon Askeland , Kjartan Iversen and Knut Hem ). In 2007 he went on tour with Thomas Dybdahl . In the field of jazz, he took part in 20 recording sessions between 2000 and 2017, including Jon Larsen's album The Jimmy Carl Black Story in 2008 .
