Eirik Hegdal (born October 3, 1973 in Gjøvik ) is a Norwegian jazz musician ( saxophone , clarinet ).

Live and act

Hegdal grew up in Inderøy , where he first learned piano. At the age of eight he received a clarinet, but initially switched to the alto saxophone . 1989-92 he had lessons at Inderøy videregående skole and Sund Folkehøyskole in Inderøy, where the first recordings were made in 1993 ( SFH 1993 ). In the following years he studied jazz music at the NTNU in Trondheim; There he founded the formation Dingobats , which existed from 1995 to 2005 (with Njål Ølnes, tenor saxophone, Thomas T. Dahl , guitar, Mats Eilertsen , bass and Sverre Gjørvad , drums), to which Hagdal contributed most of the compositions. The group released three albums, The New Dingobats Generation (1998), Pöck (2001) and Follow (2004).

From 1998 Hegdal lived in Oslo; From 2001 he played in Per Zanussi's formation Zanussi Five , with which a number of albums were created. On his return to Trondheim the following year, he became director of the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra ; He also worked with the Alpaca Ensemble , in the formations Angles 9 (with Goran Kajfeš , Johan Berthling , Magnus Broo , Martin Küchen , Mats Äleklint , Mattias Ståhl ), Brat (with Kjetil Møster , Ole Morten Vågan , Ole Thomas Kolberg), Dingobats , Dog & Sky, En En En, Formo Tre & Metall, Lord Kelvin, in the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra and with Zanussi Five. With his band Team Hegdal (including André Roligheten, Gard Nilssen, Ole Morten Vågan), he released two albums from 2010. In the field of jazz he was involved in 18 recording sessions between 1993 and 2013, including a. also with Kristoffer Kompen , Marius Neset and Lorenz Raab . Hegdal lives in Trondheim.

In 2006 Hegdal was commissioned to write a composition that was performed at the Moldejazz Festival with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra and Joshua Redman . In 2015 he received the Spellemann Prize (with his band Team Hegdal in the jazz category for the album Vol. 3 ).
