Lorenz Raab

Lorenz Raab (* 1975 in Linz ) is an Austrian trumpeter (also flugelhorn , piccolo trumpet , natural trumpet ) who oscillates between jazz and classical music.

Live and act

As a child, Raab learned to play the trumpet at the instigation of his father, who, as the conductor of the fire brigade band Rainbach im Innkreis, needed a first trumpeter. From the age of 14 he studied classical trumpet between 1989 and 1997 with Adolf Holler at the Vienna University of Music . A two-year stay in Bremen (1997–1999), where he was taught by jazz musicians such as Kenny Wheeler and Ingrid Jensen at the trumpet academy there , was decisive for his further career . After his return to Austria he continued to study the trumpet at the Salzburg Mozarteum with Hans Gansch .

In the following years Raab worked as a solo trumpeter with the Vienna Art Orchestra . Today he is the principal trumpeter of the Vienna Volksoper . He also worked with musicians such as Benjamin Schmid , Paul Gulda , Georg Breinschmid , Jamaaladeen Tacuma , dZihan & Kamien , Anthony Braxton , Wolfgang Puschnig , Christoph Cech , Max Nagl , Melissa Coleman , Otto Lechner , Christian and Wolfgang Muthspiel , Oskar Aichinger , Martin Siewert , Harry Sokal or Zeena Parkins .

In the field of jazz, Raab led bands such as Forms of Plasticity and Bleu , with whom he also released albums. In his : xy band he tries to create electronic-like sounds with acoustic means. He also appears in a duo with David Helbock . Tom Lord recorded 35 recordings of him between 2000 and 2016.

Prizes and awards

Raab has won the Hans Koller Prize twice : in 2003 he received the Audience Award, followed in 2004 as “Newcomer of the Year”; He was also nominated in 2006 in the “CD of the Year” category for his CD bleu and in 2007 in the “Musician of the Year” category.
