Max Nagl

Max Nagl (born October 5, 1960 in Gmunden ) is an Austrian jazz saxophonist, band leader and composer.

Live and act

Max Nagl took piano and clarinet lessons in his youth and attended the Linz Music High School . He then studied piano at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz and saxophone at the Vienna Conservatory and musical movement education at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna .

Since 1980 Nagl has led various jazz formations such as the Trio Flamingo (with Otto Lechner and Brad Jones ), the Big Four (with Steve Bernstein , Noël Akchoté and Brad Jones), the group Wumm! Zack! (with Clemens Salesny , Alex Meissl and Herbert Pirker ), a trio with Clemens Wenger and Herbert Pirker, the Max Nagl Quintet (with Joanna Lewis , Josef Novotny , Achim Tang and Patrice Héral ), the Max Nagl Quartet (with Joanna Lewis, Josef Novotny and Patrice Héral), the Max Nagl Trio (with Vincent Wizlsperger and Paul Skrepek ), the Max Nagl Duo (with Otto Lechner) and the The Max Nagl Ensemble (with Clemens Salesny, Franz Hautzinger , Lorenz Raab , Martin Ptak , Clemens Wenger , Josef Novotny, Achim Tang, Lukas Knöfler and Luis Ribeiro ). He has performed on tours and concerts in Europe, USA, Australia, North Africa and Taiwan.

Since 1995 he has received composition commissions for chamber music, drama, radio plays and dance theater. In 2002 the children's opera Felix, or the story of someone who set out to learn how to scare, premiered at the Vienna Volksoper ; In 2005 the world premiere of the operetta Der Siebte Himmel in Vierteln (based on a libretto by Franzobel ) took place in the Museumsquartier Vienna .

In the field of dance Nagl worked mainly with Christine Gaigg and her group 2nd Nature, but also with Yoshiko Chuma , Donald Fleming , Dan Froot and David Zambrano in New York and with Bert Gstettner .
