Bert Gstettner

Bert Gstettner (born June 16, 1961 in Vienna ) is an Austrian choreographer and dancer as well as founder and director of the contemporary dance company Tanz * Hotel.

life and work

Herbert Gstettner, who grew up in Purbach in Burgenland, began his stage dance training at the age of 21, mainly in Vienna, and received singing lessons from Edwin Szamosi (Libero Canto). This was followed by dance and choreography studies in Paris and New York, especially with Erick Hawkins . He celebrated its stage premiere in 1983 under the Peter Wissmann Ensemble in the Serapionstheater on Wallensteinplatz. Collaborations and project initiatives in what was then the center for contemporary dance and theater in the Werkstätten- und Kulturhaus Wien WUK . In 1986 he danced in a choreography by Sin Cha Hong at the international La Mama Theater in New York. 1987 founding of his first company and beginning of his choreographic activity. After another study visit to New York, he founded his company Tanz * Hotel in 1991/92. He and his team moved into their own premises in the former Heller sugar factory in Vienna's 10th district . Numerous choreographies, in-house productions and festival participations all over Europe, India, Egypt, South America, Russia and the USA followed. Commissioned work for Wiener Festwochen , Steirischer Herbst, Linzer Klangwolke , Museumsquartier Wien , Wiener Volksoper , Wiener Staatsopernballett , WienMozart2006, Neue Oper Wien , Schauspielhaus Graz . After the factory area was closed and sold in 2005, Tanz * Hotel moved to Zirkusgasse and built the new base station “Tanz * Hotel |” in the vicinity of Leopoldstadt Resort 1020 ". Between 2006 and 2015, the designer Devi Saha was not only responsible for the costumes for the Tanz * Hotel productions, but was also the artistic co-director.Since 2016, Hanna Adlaoui-Mayerl has taken over the costume department at the Tanz * Hotel productions (like already 2004-2005).

Gstettner is also active in dance politics. The Tanz * Raum symposium initiated by Gstettner - which was planned as a nine-part series with workshops and events for freelance choreographers - took place for the first time in 1989 in the Sculptor's House, St. Margarethen . In 1992 another symposium was organized in Vorarlberg, together with Roland Martin. In 1997 the choreographer's platform was founded with the aim of building a dance house for the independent scene in Vienna (establishment of the Tanzquartier Wien, 2001). For years he was involved in the IG Freie Theater and served on the board. For several years he has been involved in contemporary choreography on the board of Bildrecht GmbH.

In addition to his artistic work, Gstettner teaches contemporary dance. His training is a combination of somatic principles and Far Eastern martial arts. Since 2008 he has headed the residency / coaching / mentoring project Artist At Resort for future dance professionals.
