Jonathan Bepler

Jonathan Bepler (* 1959 in Media , Pennsylvania ) is an American composer , guitarist , singer and installation artist .

Life

Jonathan Bepler studied composition with Louis Calabro , Joel Chadabe and Vivian Fine , singing with Frank Baker and Theodore Uppman and music performance with Milford Graves , Bill Dixon and Min Tanaka at Bennington College in Bennington / Vermont until 1993 .

From 1985 to 1996 he was the guitarist of the Glenn Branca Ensemble , with whom he toured three times in Europe, the USA and Asia. In addition, he began composing his first opera in 1987. During his student days, he was involved as a choreographer and singer in the performance of several baroque operas (including Gluck's Orpheo ed Euridice ).

From 1993 onwards, the first sound installations ( Source to Sound ), drama and ballet music were created. From 1996 he worked as a composer on the film series Cremasters by Matthew Barney . In 1997 he was the baritone soloist at the world premiere of Burkhard Stangl's opera Der Venusmond on the Empire State Building .

From 2000 he worked at the Berlin Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz as a composer a. a. with Sasha Waltz and Lisa Densem . In 2003, the piece California was created in collaboration with John Jasperse for the Festival International de Danse a Cannes . In 2006 the Ensemble Modern performed its Fascia (concert piece for orchestra, children's choir, opera soloists and foley artists ) at the Schauspielhaus Frankfurt .
