Governor of Alabama

Due to the split in the Democratic Party in 1986, Hunt was able to extend his lead in the election for the governor of Alabama and win. He was re-elected in 1990. During his first term in office, his concern was to attract more industrial companies and tourists to the state. His election and subsequent nominations have greatly strengthened the Republican Party in Alabama. Despite these gains, Hunt's official goals were thwarted by the majority of Democrats in parliament. After Hunt was re-elected in 1990, defeating Paul Hubbert , Hunt spent the second part of his term defending himself against charges of violating state moral codes. He was convicted of illegally using and managing funds to pay off personal debts and was dismissed from office on April 22, 1993, although he was later rehabilitated for proven innocence. Lieutenant Governor James Folsom Jr. was sworn in as the new governor on the same day.
