Artistic work

Jasperse grew up in Rockville, Maryland . In 1985 he graduated from Sarah Lawrence College . Since then he has lived in New York . From 1987 to 1993 he worked with Jennifer Monson . 1988 - 1989 he appeared in Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker's company Rosas in Belgium.

Since 1990 he has been Artistic Director of the New York John Jasperse Company .

Joyce Morgenroth describes his work as "cryptic" and "often described with contradicting terms". One of the most important contradictions is “his play between tight structures and fleeting style of movement”. His dancers drive an “interactive choreographic process”. The set and props are closely involved in the dance, with the dancers often moving or interacting with them.

Jasper's works have been performed in the United States , Brazil , Chile , Israel , Japan, and many places in Europe; including at the Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music , at the Venice Biennale , at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis , at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago , and at Tanz im August in Berlin . Michail Baryschnikow's White Oak Dance Project , the Batsheva Dance Company and the Ballet of the Opéra de Lyon performed choreographies by him.

Among the many awards he and his company won include:

In 2011 he was appointed a Fellow of the United States Artists .
