Clemens Wenger (born June 1, 1982 in Krems ) is an Austrian musician ( piano , accordion , live electronics , composition ) who initially emerged in the field of jazz .

Live and act

Wenger studied jazz piano with Paul Urbanek at the Gustav Mahler Conservatory from 2000 to 2005 , and jazz theory and composition with Ed Partyka at the Vienna Conservatory until 2006 . At the Danube University Krems he completed the master's degree "Music for Film & Media". During his studies he met Clemens Salesny , Wolfgang Schiftner, Daniel Riegler, Bernd Satzinger and Peter Rom , with whom he founded the JazzWerkstatt Wien association in 2004 with a label of the same name. He played in the groups of Bumi Fian / Clemens Salesny, Max Nagl , Valérie Sajdik , Georg Breinschmid and Maja Osojnik, with whom he also recorded albums. He was also active at Ausseer Hardbradler and Studio Dan and is successful with the Viennese soul band 5 / 8erl in Ehr'n . He performed at the Moers Festival , the Saalfelden International Jazz Festival , the Wiesen Jazz Festival, the Salzburg Autumn Jazz Festival , the Inntöne Festival and the Vienna Jazz Festival . He has also worked with Wolfgang Reisinger , Andy Manndorff , Gerald Preinfalk , Sibylle Kefer and Willi Resetarits .

With the trio no. Wenger also explored microtonality in his compositions ( The Truth Is on Fire , 2012). He wrote the work Morphing (2014) for the Vorarlberg Jazz Orchestra . In 2015 he performed his piece Hotel Metropole with Willi Landl and the JazzWerkstatt Wien New Ensemble . He is also increasingly composing for theater and film. For the Munich Volkstheater he wrote theater music for the productions Brave New World and The Demons , both by director Felix Hafner . In 2016 his first solo album "Naples" was released. With Mira Lu Kovacs , he presented the program The Urge of Night at the Glatt & Verkehrt Festival in 2019 (Wenger arranged Kovacs' pop songs for a chamber music ensemble consisting of 4 French horns , bassoon , clarinet , double bass , percussion , synthesizer and Kovacs on guitar and voice ).

Prizes and awards

Wenger received the second prize at the Austrian Young Lions Award in 2001 . In 2006 he was awarded the Fidelio Prize of the Vienna Conservatory and (together with the JazzWerkstatt Wien ) as "Newcomer of the Year" with the Hans Koller Prize . With 5 / 8erl in Ehr'n , he received four Amadeus Austrian Music Awards in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2018 . His album Naples (in the "Grenzgang" category) was shortlisted for the German Record Critics Prize . In 2019 he was awarded the recognition prize of the Lower Austrian Culture Prize in the music category .
