Salzburg Jazz Autumn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Salzburg Jazz Autumn was an annual music festival in Salzburg .

The Salzburg Jazz Autumn was founded in 1996 by Johannes Kunz and was regularly organized by his company Vienna Entertainment GmbH until 2004 . From 2005 to 2012 Johannes Kunz organized the Salzburger Jazz-Herbst as managing director of the Salzburger Jazz-Herbst Veranstaltungs GmbH .

The festival took place every year from the end of October to the beginning of November. It played large and small performance venues in the city of Salzburg such as the Great Festival Hall, the Salzburg Congress, the Great University Hall, the Mozarteum , the Stiegl Brewery , the Oval-Die Bühne in the Europark and the Romanisches Keller. In addition to jazz concerts, night sessions , matinees and jazz galas, the Salzburg Jazz Autumn also consisted of exhibitions and film screenings on the subject of jazz.

In its first season in 1996, the Salzburg Autumn Jazz Festival featured world stars such as Ray Charles , Joe Zawinul and Lalo Schifrin . In the following years musicians such as Dave Brubeck , Sonny Rollins , Johnny Griffin , Dee Dee Bridgewater , Oscar Klein , Sabina Hank , Adam Makowicz , Wynton Marsalis , Abbey Lincoln and the Vienna Art Orchestra performed . Cross-genre musicians such as Paco de Lucía , Ute Lemper and the Blind Boys of Alabama could also be heard.

The old town festival “ Jazz & The City ”, which takes place in the run-up to the jazz autumn, offers around a hundred events with free admission. This led to a massive drop in the number of visitors. After numerous concerts in 2012 were not well attended, it was initially planned to allow the festival to take place again in Salzburg in 2013 and then to move to Grafenegg in 2014 . The withdrawal of the City of Salzburg from co-financing and the difficult economic environment in the search for sponsors did the rest. The operating company had to file for bankruptcy in August 2013 due to liabilities of more than one million euros . The festival had to be canceled in 2013 and 2014; it should have been continued in Grafenegg Castle in 2015 .
