Popfest
The Popfest has been an annual festival in Vienna since 2010 for innovative pop music by Austrian musicians and bands. It takes place on Karlsplatz and in some adjacent buildings such as the Technical University , the Wien Museum , the project space of the Kunsthalle and, since 2011, brut Wien in the Künstlerhaus . In 2012 the Ost Klub on Schwarzenbergplatz was also one of the venues, and in 2014 Club Roxy . In 2013, two concerts were held inside the Karlskirche for the first time . Entry to all events is free.
history
Emerging from the concept of an art space at Karlsplatz , the project group karlsplatz.org around Gabriela Hegedüs , Peter Melichar and Christoph Möderndorfer organized a series of concerts for the first time on the square and in , parallel to the European Football Championship in Austria and Switzerland, with the Karlsplatz art zone the park in front of the Karlskirche in Vienna . On a “lake stage” in the pond in front of the Karlskirche several concerts were held daily, mainly by Austrian musicians from the field of songwriting , the more experimental pop and contemporary Viennese song scenes; on a “tree stage” performances by performance artists. Due to the success with the participating artists and the audience as well as the positive media response, planning for the Popfest began. The festival management is with Christoph Möderndorfer, the coordination with Gabriele Hegedüs and Juliane Krüger. The musician and journalist Robert Rotifer joined the organization team as curator . The sponsor is the Popfest Wien association, an association for the promotion and dissemination of innovative, contemporary pop music.

Popfest 2012
In 2012, the Popfest did not take place at the beginning of May as in previous years, but from July 26th to 29th. The reasons for the postponement were given as the more constant weather in summer and the proximity of the Musikvereinssaal , with which there should be no acoustic problems during its summer break as in the previous year. Despite the appointment, the number of visitors remained constant at around 50,000 during the vacation period.
Programmatically, the organizers continue to understand it as being committed to the “quality and lively diversity of the participating artists”, trying to fathom the “entire artistic potential of a current local pop generation” and accepting it as a “miraculously fleshed out antithesis Casting shows & Co in times of poor vision. ” Robert Rotifer curated the festival for the third and last time. From 2013, the program of the Popfest is to be put together by curators who change every year. He referred to the Meltdown Festival in London as a successful example of such a festival .

Popfest 2019
The curators of the 10th Vienna Pop Festival from July 25 to 28, 2019 were Mira Lu Kovacs and Yasmin Hafedh . For the anniversary, the 10th edition of the festival, the book Ein Deka Pop was published by the Falter- Verlag , edited by the organizers of the Popfest and with texts by Robert Rotifer on all 400 artists who have performed up to then.
Popfest 2020
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Austria , which resulted in regulations that made public events in public spaces largely impracticable, the Popfest 2020 took place as a pop festival in a state of emergency , reduced to two concert evenings on July 25 and 26. The curator duo Herwig Zamernik and Esra Özmen also presented this shortened edition, but are supposed to put together the full program for the following year.
The four concerts of 2020 were played on Saturday and Sunday evenings in the Karlskirche. Hirsch Fisch and Voodoo Jürgens played the first evening, Marie Spaemann and Soap & Skin the second . As always at Popfest, admission was free, the very limited number of tickets issued for this year's numbered and spaced-apart seats were raffled off.
