Son of the Velvet Council
Son of the Velvet Rat is an Austrian band founded by frontman Georg Altziebler. Other current band members: Heike Binder (organ, accordion, backing vocals), Albrecht Klinger (bass), Michael Willmann (drums) and Dominik Krejan (Fender Rhodes).
history
Son of the Velvet Rat was founded in 2003 by Georg Altziebler and his wife Heike Binder. The first releases Spare Some Sugar [for the Rat] and By My Side were released on Starfish Records, a Californian independent label.
From 2006 Son of the Velvet Rat appeared on the Viennese indie label monkey. In the same year, Fall with Me reached number 3 on the Austrian FM4 charts. In 2008 Son of the Velvet Rat was nominated for the Amadeus Austrian Music Award in the "Alternative" category.
Like the previous album Red Chamber Music , the album Firedancer was voted “Best Austrian Album of the Year” by the Wiener Zeitung. Firedancer was also released in the USA on March 21, 2014.
Some of Son of the Velvet Rat's albums were released in South Korea on the Polyphone label.
Son of the Velvet Rat is touring in various line-ups in the US and Europe. The couple lives either in Austria or California.
Style, reception and cooperation
The music of Son of the Velvet Rat is inspired by artists such as Townes Van Zandt , the French chansoner Georges Brassens or the garage rockers Dead Moon . Altziebler's music has often been compared to that of Bob Dylan , Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits , but has also been associated with names like Radiohead . His style has been described as Folk Noir, Folk Rock , Garage Rock or " Americana ".
From the beginning, Georg Altziebler's publications in Austria and Europe were positively received by the critics. The Austrian daily Kurier gave Altziebler the title “Best songwriter the country has produced”.
Georg Altziebler collaborated with Lucinda Williams on Red Chamber Music (2011), former Wilco drummer Ken Coomer , who also produced the albums Loss & Love (2007) and Animals (2009), Kristof Hahn (Swans) and Richard Pappik (Element of Crime). Lucinda Williams spoke in a Stereo Subversion interview about a concert the band had seen in Los Angeles. Peter Jesperson, former producer and manager of the Replacements , wrote the liner notes for the album Red Chamber Music . The 2017 studio album Dorado was produced by singer-songwriter Joe Henry and was released on the American label Fluff & Gravy Records. The following song Blood Red Shoes is supported vocally by Victoria Williams .
