On New Year's Eve 1989/90, the Flex, operated by a group of people from the scene around the occupied house in Aegidigasse, opened in Arndtstraße in Vienna's 12th district . Initially as a mix of underground club, point meeting and cultural center, with a focus on concerts by hardcore punk bands. Later, within a year and a half, the club relocated to a disused subway shaft on the U4 line on the Danube Canal . The construction of the new club cost around 11 million schillings (around 800,000 euros), of which the City of Vienna contributed a one-off start-up subsidy of 3 million schillings (around 220,000 euros). The new restaurant opened on October 1st, 1995. In addition, since 2007 the "Flex" has had a porch next to the club entrance ("Flex Café"). The club has around 100,000 visitors annually.

controversy

Over the years, the club has hit the headlines again and again, and it is often portrayed as the drug hangout par excellence. The Flex has also already been accused of racist door policy. In addition, the club was refused to move the curfew from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. until July 2011. The reason for this was cited by the police as the crime problem, especially in connection with drugs, around the Flex. In July 2011, however - after years of discussion - the curfew was finally extended to 6 a.m., as in most other clubs in Vienna. The decision in 2005 to prevent guards from taking drinks in front of the Flex caused a stir, as at that time the path along the Danube Canal behind the Flex was closed due to underground construction work. The incorporation of public land on the Danube Canal Promenade, which is heavily frequented by pedestrians and cyclists and narrowed to a width of 4 m by the construction of a 3 m high fence, is also causing controversy.
