A Life, A Song, A Cigarette is an Austrian alternative country band from Vienna . In 2008 and 2009 the band was nominated for the FM4 Award, which is presented as part of the Amadeus Austrian Music Award .

history

The band was founded by Stephan Stanzel, together with Hannes Wirth , Philipp Karas, Martin Knobloch and his brother Michael Knobloch. Originally the group should have been called Sugarplum Fairy , until it was noticed that there was already a band from Scandinavia with this name. Stanzel, Wirth and Karas previously played together in the Dynamo 99 group, whose live technician was Daniel Grailach. He also recorded the first demo and subsequently also took the place behind the drums. Then Sandra Trimmel joined the band as a singer. In this formation and under the newly chosen name A Life, A Song, A Cigarette, the first concert took place at the beginning of 2005 in Chelsea in Vienna. After a not very serious appeal during an interview on Puls TV for more musicians - e.g. B. Cellists - in the band, the cellist Lukas Lauermann signed up and immediately became a new member. The first concert with this 7-person line-up then took place in the spring of 2006 in the Kunsthalle on Karlsplatz. However, that should be the only thing in this formation, because shortly afterwards they separated from singer Sandra Trimmel. In the summer of 2006, the first album Fresh Kills Landfill was recorded, the female backing vocals were taken over by Virginia Dellenbaugh. The album, released by Siluh in 2007, was well received by the media. Several concert tours followed through Austria, Germany and Switzerland. In 2008 the second long player, Black Air, was released . The work was produced by Ken Stringfellow ( The Posies , REM , Big Star ). After that it got a bit quieter for the six Viennese. Four years should pass before the next album. During this time they separated from founding member Philipp Karas, built their own studio and tinkered with new material. Keyboard and piano parts were taken over by Lukas Lauermann, in the studio as well as live. Tideland was released in 2012 and was produced, recorded and mixed by the band themselves, with the support of Philipp Nikodem-Eichenhardt, and the whole thing in their own studio, the “Tonkombüse”. It was there that work on the fourth album began in autumn 2013. This time again with a producer, namely Stefan Deisenberger. The creation process took two years, which is mainly due to the activity of the individual actors. But it also describes the serenity with which this fourth long player was created. After almost ten years with Siluh Records, they also changed the record company. Therefore, "All That Glitters Is Not Gold" was released on Living Room Records on January 29th, 2016.
