Mia Zabelka

Mia Zabelka (born September 21, 1963 in Vienna ) is an Austrian composer, electric violinist and vocalist. She lives in southern Styria .

Career

Mia Zabelka studied at the Vienna Conservatory composition with Kurt Schwertsik and violin with Alexander Arenkov , further electroacoustic music at Roman Haubenstock-Ramati and Dieter Kaufmann at the University of Music and Performing Arts , as well as musicology and journalism at the University of Vienna at Walter Pass .

In addition and afterwards there were study trips to Cologne, Berlin and New York; Concerts in Europe, the USA and the former USSR. She was composer in residence at the Kunst-Station Sankt Peter in Cologne, worked at the Studio for Electronic Music , at the ZKM in Karlsruhe , at STEIM, Amsterdam and at the Experimental Studio of the Warschauer Rundfunk. From 1995 to 2000 she was artistic director of the Klangturm St. Pölten.

Since around 1985 the musician has been engaged in interdisciplinary improvisation techniques, with the "exploration of the relationship between body, gestures, sound and space", what she calls "automatic playing" and where she networks sound art, new media and literature. In 2007 she founded the Klang.haus as an international center for sound art and a “forum for creative developments” where, for example, events are on the program for each of the four seasons in her home town of Untergreith (municipality of St. Johann im Saggautal ) .

There were real-time compositions, improvisations and live performances with, for example, John Zorn , David Moss , Peter Kowald , Phil Wachsmann , Lukas Ligeti , Franz Hautzinger , Martin Siewert , Phil Minton , Shelley Hirsch , Fernando Grillo , Elliott Sharp , Wolfgang Mitterer , Frances-Marie Uitti , Josef Klammer , Joëlle Léandre , Fred Frith , Manon Liu-Winter , "I-Wolf" Wolfgang Schlögl , DJ Still and Dälek , Gerhard Potuznik , Rupert Huber , Robin Rimbaud and Electric Indigo .

In 2002 she founded the One.Night.Band, together with Zahra Mani ; in constant cooperation with this, other musicians are invited for individual performances. There were also duo projects with Zahra Mani: Intimate Surfaces; Automatic playing; Velvet Beams. Furthermore the Greither cantata, a Klang.haus project in which Zahra Mani and Bruno Pisek participated, among others. The intermedia performance Secrets of a Soul , based on the film of the same name by GW Pabst , was created in collaboration with the Finnish media and film artist Mia Makela .
