Shelley Hirsch (born June 9, 1952 in Brooklyn , New York ) is an American singer and composer. She is considered one of the outstanding singers in improvised music. But she is also interested in electronic music, multimedia and theater performance, installations and radio plays.

Live and act

After dropping out of her studies, she first moved to San Francisco, where she gained experience with experimental theater, developed new vocal techniques and composed pieces for voice. She came to Berlin on a DAAD scholarship. In 1983 the acquaintance with Sven-Åke Johansson in Berlin led to the introduction of improvisational music, which Hirsch was able to deepen through experiences with Jon Rose and - back in New York City - with Christian Marclay . Since the mid-1980s she has worked with the John Zorn scene , in particular with David Weinstein , Elliott Sharp , Anthony Coleman and Marc Ribot , but also with DJ Olive, Mark Dresser , Greetje Bijma , Chantal Dumas, David Moss , Min Xiao Fen , Jerry Hunt, Toshio Kajiwara, Jin Hi Kim, Ikue Mori , Marina Rosenfeld and Ned Rothenberg . Her LP “Singing” was released in 1988, followed by the CD “Haiku Lingo” with Weinstein a year later. In the September Band she recorded with Rüdiger Carl , Hans Reichel and Paul Lovens , in the X-Communication group with Butch Morris , Martin Schütz and Hans Koch . Her “O Little Town of East New York” is published on Zorn's label Tzadik in the series “ Radical Jewish Culture ”. Hirsch also interpreted compositions such as Cathy Berberian's “Stripsody” or Alvin Curran's Philharmonic .

In the visual arts, Hirsch has worked with Barbara Bloom and Jim Hodges; Furthermore, there were collaborations with the choreographer Noemie LaFrance and the filmmakers Nina Danino ( Tenemos soundtrack with Sainkho Namtchylak , 2001), Zoe Beloff, Abigail Child and Lee Sachs.

Hirsch won the Prix ​​Futura with the radio version of O Little Town of East New York . She gives international workshops and leads master classes and has been to Berlin and Amsterdam for longer work stays.
