David Weinstein (musician)

David Weinstein (* 1954 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American keyboardist , composer and installation artist.

Live and act

Weinstein studied composition at the University of Illinois with Ben Johnston and Salvatore Martirano . In 1978 he went to New York City , where he co-founded the New York event venue Roulette , whose productions he directed from 1978 to 1994. As a keyboard player, he moved in the New York downtown scene and was initially best known for his collaboration with John Zorn , on whose productions Cobra , The Big Gundown and Spillane he was involved. He also performed his own productions. He also played for a long time in a duo with Shelley Hirsch , with whom he also recorded several albums. Their joint production O Little Town of East New York was awarded the Prix ​​Futura in 1993. He was also involved in productions by Elliott Sharp , Ned Rothenberg , Paul Dresher , Rhys Chatham and many others from Arto Lindsay to Zeena Parkins .

Weinstein also created plays and installations. His multimedia collaboration with video artist Doris Vila led to a prize at Ars Electronica in 2002 . Between 2004 and 2008 he was the program director of the internet radio WPS1.org; he currently holds the same position at Artonair.org internet radio.
