Arto Lindsay
Arto Lindsay (born May 28, 1953 in Richmond , Virginia ) is an American guitarist, singer, record producer and sound artist .
Career
Lindsay grew up as the son of American missionaries between the ages of three and 17 in Brazil. From an early age he listened to a lot of music from both cultures. He mentions the adventurous Tropicália movement of that time as a strong influence, especially Caetano Veloso , Gal Costa , Os Mutantes and Gilberto Gil .
In 1970 he went back to the USA to go to college, in 1974 he moved to New York, where he was attracted by the lively art and music scene, especially free jazz and the punk rock movement that was just developing .
His first band, DNA, was released for the first time in 1978 on Brian Eno's compilation " No New York " , which (co-) coined the label No Wave for this style. He then played in many different formations, often together with John Lurie , Bill Frisell , Fred Frith , John Zorn ( Spillane ) and Bill Laswell .
Since then, Lindsay has remained a central figure in the Manhattan music scene. He played with John Lurie at the Lounge Lizards , with Anton Fier at the Golden Palominos , he produced Laurie Anderson and David Byrne , for whose label Luaka Bop he also translated Brazilian lyrics, starred in several films, including Susan ... desperately wanted , and eventually founded his own formation, the "Ambitious Lovers".
He has been releasing his albums as a solo artist since the 1990s. They are more influenced by its Brazilian roots, but in a modern electronic sound.
Most recently he was commissioned to compose the music for a production of Mikhail Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project .
Typical is his soft voice and his often noisy, chord-free, self-taught guitar playing, which has been described by one critic as "polished naive, like the illegitimate son of Derek Bailey ".
producer
Lindsay has produced the albums of numerous Brazilian musicians, including those by Caetano Veloso , Tom Zé , Gal Costa , Carlinhos Brown and Marisa Montes platinum album "Memórias, Crônicas e Declarações de Amor" .
Art projects and collaborations
In addition to those already mentioned, Lindsay has worked with many other artists over the years, including Heiner Müller / Heiner Goebbels , They Might Be Giants , Marc Ribot , Ryuichi Sakamoto and Kip Hanrahan . In 2005 Lindsay wrote the epilogue of the official biography of the Einstürzende Neubauten “Only what is not is possible” .
Through his friendship with Diego Cortez (alias James Curtis) he came into contact with many visual artists, especially from the East Village , including Jean-Michel Basquiat , Nan Goldin , Francesco Clemente and Andy Warhol . Images of Goldin, Kara Walker and Matthew Barney already adorned his albums. He has also worked with the Canadian artist Rodney Graham on an exhibition, as well as on a sound art exhibition at the New York gallery PS1 .
