Oeuvre

Rodney Graham has created a multi-layered oeuvre since the mid-1970s, which he has realized in an abundance of different media such as film, photography, installation, painting, printmaking, literature and music. With a lot of poetic irony, refinement and conceptual originality, the artist visualizes relationships between the various levels of everyday life and cultural history. He examines and reflects on artistic, musical and literary works and events in intellectual history from all epochs and creates a complex work between reality and fiction. The works deal, among other things, with central personalities of the culture of the 19th and early 20th centuries (e.g. Edgar Allan Poe , Richard Wagner , Raymond Roussel or Sigmund Freud and his dream of the botanical monograph ) or reflect popular myths of the cinema . Graham subjects the works he uses for his own art to a sympathetic criticism from the inside out and thus transforms them. Often his art refers to cinematic clichés or familiar elements of popular music. Repetition plays a central role in Graham's work as a formal and structural principle, not only in his films, but also in many other works.

Rodney Graham's work has been shown in numerous solo exhibitions, including a. in the retrospective from 2004 to 2005 (MoCA Los Angeles, ICA Philadelphia, Vancouver Art Gallery and others), in the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London (2002), in the Hamburger Bahnhof Berlin (2001) and in 2006/7 in the Sprengel Museum (Hanover). He has participated in Documenta IX (1992), the Venice Biennale (1997 and 2003) and the Whitney Biennale in New York.
