Sigi Maron (born May 14, 1944 in Vienna as Siegfried Maron ; † July 18, 2016 in Baden near Vienna ) was a socially critical Austrian singer-songwriter .

Maron grew up with six siblings in Gneixendorf (then :) near Krems an der Donau . Since he became ill with polio in 1956 , he was dependent on a wheelchair. The doctor recommended a musical instrument. He was given a guitar to practice grasping with the left hand and, as he says himself, "regained his left hand." Since 1997 he has rarely been seen live for health reasons. At the end of 2014 he announced that he would no longer give concerts.

He used the Viennese dialect in his songs and did not shy away from using bold expressions. As an atheist and communist , Maron mostly dealt with political and socially critical issues such as unemployment, the construction of the Zwentendorf nuclear power plant, armaments expenditure and organ trade, which he subsumed under “crap capitalism”. His resignation from a large record company, for which he had worked for a long time as an IT specialist, as part of a rationalization measure, he put in this context. He became known in the context of the cast of the Arena in Vienna in 1976 with his albums Schön is' das Leb'n (1976) and Laut & Leise (1978). He appeared at numerous demonstrations, such as the great peace demonstration in Vienna on May 15, 1982.

In the ORF he had long desired. Broadcasting performances and songs by Maron was forbidden to all editorial offices for three decades. He was a star in the GDR whose concerts were broadcast in the main evening program and whose records were published by Amiga in large numbers .

With his single Geh no net fort he was in the Austrian charts for ten weeks in 1985, the best placement of the song was number 5. After a 14-year break due to illness, he released the double album There is kan Gott in October 2010 . After two live albums, including Es is net ollas ans , which was recorded at the Ö1 -Radiokulturhaus , he released the album Dynamit und Edelschrott in spring 2014 . In autumn 2014 he went on a farewell tour.

In 1998 and 2003 Maron ran unsuccessfully for the Austrian Communist Party for the Lower Austrian Landtag . In 2004 he was one of the jurors of the protest song contest .

In the opinion of the left-wing daily Junge Welt, his best-known song, the ballad by ana hoatn Wochn , he furnished with the “manifest-like refrain”, which is also known as the “Swabian greeting”: with Leckts mi aum Oasch . He spoke, as he once said, “politely, elegantly and discreetly, as I always do, but with the inclusion of a certain vulgar vocabulary”.
