Paul Urbanek

Paul Urbanek (born June 15, 1964 in Vienna ) is an Austrian jazz pianist and composer .

Life

Urbanek, son of a pianist, studied piano and improvisation at the Gustav Mahler Conservatory in Vienna and keyboard at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . In 1986 he made his debut as a jazz pianist.

As a studio musician, he worked on more than 70 albums and worked a. a. with Harri Stojka , Alegre Corrêa , Izabel Padovani , Kim Dok Soo , Maria Pia De Vito and Bertl Mayer and groups like The Next Generation of Sound and the Orchester National de Jazz .

Since 1994 he has been running Paul Urbanek's Funboard (with Oliver Gattringer , Patrice Héral and Uwe Urbanovsky ). In 2001 he released the album The Hans Koller Concept , on which he played a solo piano accompaniment to saxophone improvisations by Hans Koller and Wolfgang Puschnig that had been written years before . In 2001 it received the Hans Koller Prize as album of the year.

Urbanek teaches jazz piano and improvisation at the JAM MUSIC LAB - Conservatory for Jazz and Popular Music and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna .
