Christian Maurer (* 19th April 1967 in Ried im Innkreis ) is an Austrian jazz - and classical - saxophone .

life and work

Maurer was born in 1967 in Ried in Upper Austria . At the age of seven he started playing the recorder , clarinet and saxophone. From 1988 he studied saxophone at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna , where he taught classical saxophone from 1991 and completed his habilitation in 2003 .

In the field of classical music he worked with the Vienna Philharmonic , the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra .

In the jazz field he became known through his work with the Vienna Art Orchestra , Kenny Wheeler , Karl Ratzer , Natalie Cole , Joe Zawinul , Hans Koller , Dorretta Carter and the Upper Austrian Jazz Orchestra, which he co-founded, and as a member of the group Saxofour . He also played with The Supremes and Liza Minnelli . Traveling Hard with the Robert Bachner Quintet won the Hans Koller Prize for best CD in 2006 .
