Josef Novotny

Josef Novotny (born February 22, 1963 in Meggenhofen / Upper Austria ) is an Austrian composer and musician specializing in jazz and new music .

From 1978 to 1983 Novotny attended the Linz Music High School and the Bruckner Conservatory , where he studied organ with August Humer and jazz with Adelhard Roidinger . From 1984 to 1993 he was organ student of Peter Planyavsky and composition student of Erich Urbanner at the Musikhochschule Wien .

He works with musicians such as Elfi Aichinger , Burkhard Stangl , Jonathan Bepler , the Ensemble Wien 2001 , Elisabeth Harnik , Joanna Lewis , Achim Tang , Patrice Héral , Peter Herbert , Lol Coxhill , John Russell , David Tronzo , Gerry Hemingway , Tony Buck , Julia Fischer or Jonas Hellborg together. He has performed at festivals in Europe, the USA, Asia and Australia.

Novotny is u. a. Member of Max Nagl's quintet , the group touching (with Hannes Löschel and Thomas Lehn ) and a quartet with Katharina Klement , Martin Zrost and Paul Skrepek . He performs as a pianist and organist, plays synthesizers, also works with live electronics and did the mastering and remixing for many recordings .
