The Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) of the National Weather Service of the United States is that of the World Meteorological Organization certain Regional Specialized Meteorological Center , which for monitoring and issuing warnings of tropical cyclones in the central Pacific Ocean is responsible. The institution is located on the campus of the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Honolulu , Hawaii, USA .
tasks
The CPHC has replaced the Hurricane Warning Center since the 1970 season . Warnings and explanations about tropical storms have been issued from there since 1970. The Honolulu forecast bureau will notify you when a storm forms or is approaching the Central Pacific Region . This region lies north of the equator between 140th degree west longitude and the date line ; so the area of responsibility covers 5 million square miles . The area of responsibility for marine forecasting is 11 million square miles on the Pacific north and south of the equator.
Naming
The Central Pacific Hurricane Center uses traditional Hawaiian names for hurricanes. There are four lists for naming. As soon as the names of the first list are exhausted, the names of the second list are used. In contrast to the names of the lists in the eastern Atlantic and Pacific, the list from the previous year continues with the next name at the beginning of the year. When the fourth list is exhausted, the names of the first list are selected again.
