A Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (abbreviated RSMC , French Center météorologique régional spécialisé CMRS ) is the meteorological department of a weather service which, according to the agreement of the member states concerned of the World Meteorological Organization , is responsible for issuing warnings and notices regarding the respective program within the framework of global weather observations .

Tropical Cyclone Programs

Areas of responsibility and location of the individual RSMCs in the Tropical Cyclone Program with the main distribution areas of tropical cyclones.

There are six such regional centers and five Tropical Cyclone Warning Centers , which deal with the observation of and the creation of warnings of tropical cyclones :

Due to the historical development of weather observations, the formation of tropical cyclones is divided into seven areas of origin. These basins are the North Atlantic, East Pacific, West Pacific, South West Pacific, South West Indic, South East Indic, and North Indic. Historically, tropical cyclones have arisen in other places, such as Cyclone Catarina , but due to their rarity, these events do not form basins . Every year, an average of 86 tropical cyclone systems form, of which 47 wind speeds of a hurricane and 20 reach category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale .

Environmental Emergency Response Program

There are eight meteorological centers for forecasting the distribution, precipitation and pollutant composition in the event of environmental disasters that cross national borders:
