history
A small village existed here until the 20th century, which developed around an estate that was first mentioned in the 16th century. The region was occupied by the German Wehrmacht from October to December 1941 . After the Second World War, a planned town was built on the site of the village, which came into the spotlight in 1954 with the commissioning of the now decommissioned Obninsk nuclear power plant as the world's first commercially operated nuclear power plant , which led to a large population growth. In 1956 Obninsk received city rights.

The city has a 315 meter high research tower. The construction is remarkable: the tower has a diameter of only 2 to 3 m, which is why it is secured with steel cables. It is only used for research purposes and is not open to tourists.
