Sossenski ( Russian Сосенский ) is a town in Kaluga Oblast ( Russia ) with 12,392 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located about 90 km southwest of the Oblast capital Kaluga on the rivers Sossenka and Pessochnaja , right tributaries of the Schizdra in the river system of the Volga .

Sossenski is located in Koselsk district .

history

The place arose from 1952 in connection with the construction of coal shafts in the Moscow lignite basin , received the status of an urban-type settlement as Leninsky on March 19, 1954 , but this was done on April 10 of the same year in Shepelyovsky after the name of the previously existing one Schepeljowo railway station was changed.

In 1991 city charter was granted under its current name, derived from the Russian sosna for pine (see city arms).

Economy and Infrastructure

After the coal mining was stopped, the most important companies are a plant of equipment manufacturing, building materials industry ( Stroidetal ) and the textile industry.

The city is located on the Sukhinichi - Koselsk - Tula railway, opened in 1941 ( Shepelyovo station four kilometers southeast of the city).
