Mossalsk ( Russian Мосальск ) is a small town in the Kaluga Oblast ( Russia ) with 4288 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The city is located on the southern edge of the Ugra-Protwa lowland about 90 km west of the oblast capital Kaluga on the Moschaika , a left tributary of the Ressa in the river system of the Volga .

Mossalsk is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1231 as Massalsk in the Principality of Chernigov . Later it became the center of an autonomous feudal prince . The name is believed to be of Baltic origin.

Around 1407 the city came under Lithuanian sovereignty. In 1493 troops of the Grand Duchy conquered Moscow under Ivan III. the town. The following year Moscow temporarily ceded the city in connection with the marriage of Ivan's daughter Jelena to the Lithuanian Grand Duke, before it finally came under Russian rule at the beginning of the 16th century.

In 1776 the modern town charter was granted as the administrative center of a district (Ujesds). In the middle of the 19th century, Mossalsk was an important storage and wholesale point for grain, hemp materials and vegetable oil. These goods were delivered from here via Smolensk to Riga and Saint Petersburg . As a result, however, economic development stagnated and Mossalsk remained an insignificant small town.

During World War II , Mossalsk was occupied by the German Wehrmacht on October 6, 1941 and recaptured on January 8, 1942 by the Western Front of the Red Army as part of the Rzhev-Vyazma operation .

Culture and sights

The Church of St. George ( Георгиевская церковь / Georgijewskaja zerkow) from 1745 has been preserved in Mosalsk. The city has a local museum.

The archaeological site of Moschtschino with settlement remains from the 4th to 13th centuries is located in Mossalsk Rajon .

The Saizewa Gora fishing and hunting farm is located on Lake Besdon .

Economy and Infrastructure

There are smaller companies in the textile and food industries in Mossalsk.

The highway A101 Moscow - Roslavl - Belarusian border passes 20 kilometers north of the city.
