Spas-Demensk ( Russian Спас-Деме́нск ) is a small Russian town and administrative center of the Rajon of the same name in Kaluga Oblast . It has 4896 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010), making it the smallest place with city status within the oblast.
geography
The city is located in the far west of Kaluga Oblast on the Demena River , a tributary of the Ugra , just under 200 kilometers from the regional capital, Kaluga . The railway line from Tula to Smolensk runs through the town , and in the south Spas-Demensk is affected by the A101 trunk road on the section between Yukhnov and Roslavl .
The closest towns are Kirov (40 km southeast of Spas-Demensk) and Desnogorsk (57 km southwest); the latter is in the neighboring Smolensk Oblast .
history
Spas-Demensk was first mentioned in a document in 1494 as the settlement Demensk ( Деме́нск ). The place was given the addition of "Spas" (literally "Savior") in 1855 after the "Church of the Redeemer" built here.
In the 19th century, Spas-Demensk was important as an agricultural center, where mainly the cultivation and trade in hemp was carried out. In 1917 the town was granted city rights.
During the Second World War , Spas-Demensk was occupied by troops of the German Wehrmacht and was temporarily the seat of an army high command. The place was not recaptured until August 13, 1943 by the Red Army as part of the so-called Smolensk Operation .

economy
As a very small town, Spas-Demensk has little industrial importance apart from a few factories in the textile, food and wood industries.
