Balabanowo ( Russian Балаба́ново ) is a city in Kaluga Oblast ( Russia ) with 26,337 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 75 km northeast of the Oblast capital Kaluga on the left bank of the Protwa , a left tributary of the Oka, which flows into the Volga .
Balabanowo is located in Borovsk Raion .
history
A village Balabanowo was first mentioned in the 17th century.
After the construction of the railway, a larger station settlement was built around 1900, which was given the status of an urban-type settlement in 1935 and town charter in 1972.

Culture and sights
In the valley of the nearby Istja River there are the remains of an ironworks from the 18th century.
Economy and Infrastructure
The important match factory Plitspitschprom (formerly Gigant ) and a packaging factory of the Finnish-Swedish company Stora Enso are located in Balabanowo .
The city is located on the Moscow - Brjansk - Kiev railway line opened in 1899 (route km 96).
The M3 Moscow - Brjansk - Ukrainian border road runs through Balabanowo (from there on towards Kiev), which is crossed here by the A108 Great Moscow Ring .

- Pafnuti Chebyshev (1821–1894), mathematician; was born in nearby Okatowo and spent his childhood there
