Medyn ( Russian Медынь ) is a small town in the Kaluga Oblast ( Russia ) with 8300 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located about 60 km northwest of the Oblast capital Kaluga on the Medynka River , a right tributary of the Sukhodrew in the river system of the Volga .

Medyn is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1386 when it passed from the Principality of Smolensk to the Grand Duchy of Moscow . The place name is probably of Baltic origin and refers to the abundance of forests in the area (cf. Lithuanian medis for tree ), but was also interpreted as a derivation from the Russian mjod for honey (cf. bees in the city's coat of arms).

In 1776 the town charter was granted as the administrative center of a district (Ujesds) under the name Medynsk ; subsequently the old form was still used.

During the war against Napoleon in 1812, Russian Cossack troops broke up on October 13th near Medyn . / October 25, 1812 greg. , one day after the battle of Maloyaroslavets a vanguard of the 5th Corps of the Grande Armée , which was the decisive factor for the subsequent retreat of the French towards Smolensk .

During World War II , Medyn was occupied by the German Wehrmacht on October 11, 1941 and recaptured on January 14, 1942 by the Western Front of the Red Army as part of the Rzhev-Vyazma operation .

In Medyn there is a furniture factory and factories in the textile and food industries.

The nearest railway station is 15 kilometers west in Myatlevo (station Myatlevskaya ) on the route Vyazma- Kaluga- Uslowaya - Ryashsk .

The A101 Moscow - Roslavl - Belarusian border passes through Medyn .
