Desnogorsk ( Russian Десногорск ) is a city in Smolensk Oblast ( Russia ) with 29,677 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the south of the Smolensk Heights about 150 km southeast of the Oblast capital Smolensk on the right bank of the Desna , a left tributary of the Dnepr . The river is dammed up here to form the 42 km² Desnogorsk reservoir .
Desnogorsk is administratively directly subordinate to the oblast .
A few kilometers to the south, the A101 highway from Moscow to the Belarusian border passes the city.
history
Desnogorsk emerged from the 1960s in connection with the construction of the Smolensk nuclear power plant three kilometers away , received urban-type settlement status on February 26, 1974 and town charter in 1989.

Culture and sights
33 kilometers from Desnogorsk is the former country residence Novospasskoye of the composer Mikhail Glinka , today a museum.

The town-building company is the Smolensk nuclear power plant operated by Rosenergoatom , as well as companies in the construction and food industries.
